Sussex Food Producer of the Year |

Our winner could be the producer of a single food ingredient (meat, poultry, fish, vegetables or fruit) or a prepared food product. Most of all, it should be delicious and local to Sussex.
Nominate the local farmer or manufacturer who rears the meat or poultry, grows the fruit or vegetables, makes the cheese, pickles or sauces, bakes the pies, cakes, etc and supplies us with these fine foods.
- What is the story behind their produce?
- Is there something unique or interesting about how it is prepared, grown or reared that makes it stand out?
- How has it been brought to market?
- How does its quality show itself?
- How is it presented and what makes it pleasing?
- Is it well-packaged and are the ingredients clearly listed?
- How has the produce been promoted and is it good value?

Sussex Drink Producer of the Year |

Our winner could be a soft drink or alcoholic beverage produced in Sussex, which has taste and quality shining through. Here is your chance to put forward some of the very best drinks producers in the county. For this category we want to hear about our vineyards, orchards and breweries, and the people behind them.
- Can you describe the special flavour of their product/s and what makes it so delicious and special?
- Do they specialise in the production of wine, beer, cider, apple juice, spring water or do they sell more than one product?
- Do they use fresh, natural ingredients for their juices and presses or quality traditional varieties of hops and barley for their beers?
- Is there a special story behind how they produce their wares which sets them apart from the rest?
- How have they brought their product to market?
- Do they provide good customer service?
- Is the packaging easy to read, and do their products contain artificial preservatives, flavourings and colourings?

Who has been most outspoken about the quality of Sussex produce? Who has taken every opportunity to encourage people to buy local? Perhaps you have read about their views in the media, or heard them speak at major events? Or maybe you have noticed something they have done that has raised awareness of the benefits of buying local amongst the public. Have they put themselves out and really made a mark on the local produce industry?
Please nominate your Sussex Farmer of the Year, providing details of why they deserve to win. Our panel of judges will select the top six nominees and these will be promoted on our website and at food and drink events in Sussex throughout the autumn, inviting the public to vote for their favourite champion.

Sussex Young Chef of the Year |

Our winner will be a chef between the ages of 16 to 25, who is working or studying in Sussex and has the ability to plan, prepare and present a menue based on their knowledge of the local produce grown, reared or caught in Sussex. Nominations must be made by 31st July 2008. Votes may be made on the website from the beginning of August.

Sussex Butcher of the Year |

Our winner will be a top quality butcher's, which includes local
farmers’ meat and offers that little bit extra in terms of quality and
service. Ask your butcher questions regarding where his meat comes
from. Check out the variety of items on sale and the service from the
staff in the shop. Question the butcher on his principles regarding
traceability and farming methods, such as free-range or organic
rearing.
- Why does he think the meat he serves is the best?
- Is he knowledgeable about hanging meats?
- Can he and his staff enlighten you on the best cuts of meat available and do they give you cooking hints and advice?
- Ask how they might address a complaint and if they would they be willing to change their supply because of it?
- Do they offer unusual or special extra cuts or prepared meats?
- Do they offer seasonal game and is it well-hung?

Best Sussex Eating Experience |

Our winner could be a hotel, restaurant, pub, café or other eating experience that uses mainly Sussex produce in an imaginative way and has an enjoyable atmosphere .
Judge it on its quality, taste and value for money. Consider the ambience and service of the eating experience.
- What makes you go there time after time?
- How well does the venue use seasonal products or ingredients?
- Does it serve county wines or beverages?
- Are local cheeses available?
- What was the presentation of the meal like and what was its flavour like?
- How well was it cooked?
- Was the menu interesting?
- Are families welcome and how does this demonstrate this?
- Are local suppliers’ names mentioned on the menu?
- Also consider quality and speed of service, the knowledge of the staff and the overall atmosphere.

Best Sussex Farmers Market |

Our winner will sell an exciting range of local produce and offer an experience which shoppers, producers and stallholders really enjoy. To be able to judge one farmer’s market from another, you really need to visit a few. Look out for the overall presentation of the market, the arrangement of stands, the range of food and beverages on offer, the entertainment available.
- What makes it such an enjoyable experience for you?
- Can the stallholders demonstrate the local origins of their wares?
- Are the majority of the stalls selling local goods and are you confident that it is a local farmers' market?
- Some local products might be exotic, but check the labels or ask the stallholders to see if they were prepared locally. Is it somewhere that you regularly shop or a special once-in-a-while outing?
- Is it easily accessible for the car park or public transport?
- Do you go regularly and if so, why? Or is this a special once-in-a-while outing and what makes it a great family day out?

Our winner will creatively sell mainly Sussex produce. It could be a farm shop, gate sale, a farm delivering local produce to your door, a delicatessen or local/high street shop.
- Why are you drawn to this shop?
- Do they have a good quality of service?
- Is the food unusually fresh and of high quality?
- Do they offer a home delivery service?
- Do they have a website with information on where products are from, the range of products and the services they offer?
- Do they promote seasonal produce and do they have associated offers and promotions? And most importantly, are they helping to promote locally-produced goods?
